Where Experience Meets Excellence: A Vision for Aquatic Leadership Training with AOAP

Excellence is often described as the result of relentless dedication, accumulated knowledge, and the ability to transform experience into mastery. This philosophy is at the core of the journey outlined in the multi-year aquatics leadership program, AOAP Director’s School, where professionals come together to elevate their skills, collaborate, and redefine standards in aquatic management. Through a robust and thoughtfully planned schedule, Director’s School demonstrates how experience—when harnessed effectively—can lead to unparalleled excellence.

The program brings this vision to life by focusing on team building, staff development, leadership, and sustainability in staffing, programming, and equipment.

Year 1: Building Strong Foundations

Year 1 of Director’s school goal is to establish a solid foundation. This year of the program is all about equipping aquatics professionals with the tools, strategies, and mindset necessary to create thriving teams and maintain high standards.

Key Themes:

  • Building an Aquatics Team: This session focuses on the critical aspects of hiring, onboarding, staffing models, and supervising. Building a cohesive team is about more than filling positions—it’s about finding individuals who align with your vision and creating an environment where they can thrive.

  • Increasing Staff Retention: One of the most pressing challenges in any industry is keeping talent engaged and committed. Strategies for enhancing retention involve understanding staff motivations, fostering a supportive culture, and providing opportunities for growth.

  • Aquatics Staff Training: This session explores how to design training programs that are both engaging and effective, ensuring staff are prepared for the unique demands of aquatics.

  • Legal Considerations: Safety and staffing are the cornerstones of legal compliance, and this session offers practical insights for navigating complex legal landscapes.

  • Pool Chemistry and Facility Maintenance: Excellence in aquatics requires not only interpersonal skills but also technical expertise. This session ensures professionals have the knowledge to maintain facilities that are safe and functional.

  • Aquatics Programming: Participants are led through an active discussion of programming strategies, focusing on both facility-operated and cooperative programs to enhance any aquatics program.

  • Leading for Success: This inspirational talk encourages professionals to reflect on their leadership styles and embrace strategies that promote success at both individual and team levels.

Year 2: Navigating Challenges and Elevating Communication

By Year 2, participants are prepared to tackle more advanced topics. The theme shifts from foundational skills to navigating challenges and refining leadership communication and handling day-to-day challenges.

Key Highlights:

  • You’ve Had a Drowning: What’s Next: Few situations are as critical and sensitive as responding to a drowning incident. This session provides guidance on dealing with the press, giving depositions, and offering support to staff—a testament to the program’s commitment to preparing leaders for even the most difficult moments.

  • Aquatics Advocacy: Advocacy is an essential aspect of promoting aquatics within communities and among stakeholders. This session emphasizes the importance of communicating the value of aquatic programs and securing support for long-term initiatives.

  • Intentional Communication for the Transformational Leader: Effective communication is at the heart of transformational leadership. This session empowers participants to convey their vision, inspire their teams, and foster meaningful connections.

  • Enhancing the Guest Experience: Excellence in aquatics extends beyond team management to delivering exceptional experiences for guests. Practical strategies for exceeding guest expectations are explored here.

Year 3: Innovating for a Sustainable Future

The final year of the program shifts its focus to innovation and sustainability. As participants reach the pinnacle of their journey, they are challenged to think critically about creating inclusive teams and designing facilities that are future proof.

Key Sessions:

  • Building an Inclusive Team: Diversity and inclusion are more than buzzwords—they are integral to building teams that bring varied perspectives, foster collaboration, and drive innovation.

  • Sustainability in Aquatics: From eco-friendly practices to long-term facility planning, this session explores how aquatic leaders can champion sustainability and make a lasting impact.

  • Critical Incident Stress Management: Leaders are often called upon to support their teams through challenging situations. This session provides the tools to manage stress effectively and cultivate resilience.

  • Essential Presentation Skills: Whether addressing a City Council, Commission, or community group, confident and impactful presentations are crucial. This workshop empowers participants to communicate their ideas persuasively and professionally.

The program culminates with a team project focused on Building a Sustainable Future at Your Facility. This collaborative effort encourages participants to synthesize the lessons learned throughout the program and apply them to real-world scenarios by creating a presentation to bring back to their organizations for positive change.

The Spirit of Excellence

Throughout the three years, Director’s School embodies the tagline: Where experience meets excellence. By transforming lessons into actionable strategies, it empowers aquatics professionals to elevate their craft, inspire their teams, and make a meaningful difference in their communities.

The program is more than a series of sessions—it’s a journey of growth, collaboration, and innovation. Participants leave not only with a wealth of knowledge but also with the confidence and vision to lead their organizations toward excellence.

The AOAP Board of Directors, staff, and faculty of our annual Director’s School hope you’ll consider joining us in Colorado Springs for another exceptional year of training, collaboration, and networking.
