ADHD frequently involves challenges with executive function, the set of mental skills that includes working memory, inhibition, planning, organization, getting started on a task, and shifting attention between activities. Swim lessons draw on every one of those skills at the same time. Many difficulties that look like “swimming problems” are actually signs that the cognitive load of the task has outgrown what the swimmer can manage in that moment.
